Walton

Walton is located in the L4 and L9 area of Liverpool.

It is thought that the name may derive from the same origin as Wales. The Saxons who were coming in called the Celtic Britons Walas or Wealas, which meant ‘foreigner’. Another possible meaning is Wald tun which is Old English for ‘Forest town’.

There is much argument over the meaning of ‘Wal-‘. Many believe it is a reference to the area’s large number of wells, although others believe it means ‘wood’, as it was forested until the 13th Century.

‘-ton’ derives from the Anglo-Saxon word for settlement.

Many writers also believe that Walton could mean ‘walled town’, or could even mean a ‘town of the Britons’.

Walton is thought to be the oldest village in modern Liverpool, as according to the 11th Century Doomsday survey, the village was already 600-800 years old.
