Seaforth is the district in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside. North between Liverpool City Centre and Bootle.
Seaforth’s etymology derives from Old Norse, sæ – fjord, meaning ‘sea inlet’.
In 1128 it was recorded as Safforde – ‘sea ford’, implying other Old English origins.
Another theory for the name Seaforth, is that it was taken from Seaforth House, named after Francis Mckenzie, 1st Baron Seaforth who built the mansion, Seaforth House, in 1813 for his daughter and her husband, Sir John Gladstone, father of Prime Minister William Gladstone.
Seaforth Dock opened in 1972 and is the largest dock facility on the River Mersey.
