Allerton

Allerton originated from the Old English Period (5th Century – 11th Century).

It first appeared in the Domesday book under ‘Alretune’ [1]meaning ‘the alder enclosure’. Later ALOR – with the meaning of ‘Alder tree’.

In the doomsday book, Allerton was written to have three different manors, of three different families. There is not much history surrounding the etymology of Allerton, but many landmarks embed its culture into the district. Examples of these landmarks include: Allerton priory, and Allerton tower.
