Claughton

Claughton derives from Old Norse, Viking origin, the original spelling being Klakkr-tun. The Claughton name arrived in England with the ancestors of the family in the Norman conquest of 1066 [1] The meaning of Klakkr-tun is ‘hamlet on the hillock’ [2]

The name has Old English history with Claeg + Tun, meaning ‘farmstead on clayey soil’ [1]

In 1898 Claughton became a parish within the district of Birkenhead, it became apart of the wirral hundred in 1866 [3].
