Speke is situated in the South of Liverpool. It is bordered by many neighbouring areas, Garston, Hunts Cross, Halewood and Hale Village.
Speke derives from ‘spec’ meaning Brushwood.
It was known in the Doomsday book as ‘spec’ which gave Speke Hall one of the properties held by Uctred.
In the mid 14th Century, the manors of Speke were held by William Dacre, 2nd Baron Dacre. In the1930’s, Speke inhabited around 400 people and was a small housing village, however by the late 1950’s Speke housed more than 25,000 people. From 1725 to 1921, the Speke estates were owned by the Watt Family, until the last of their name died when the Speke estate was placed in trust. It was bought by the Liverpool Corporation in 1928.
