Great Cosby

Great Crosby, historically was a small village which has a Viking origin. The village grew rapidly during the late 19th and 20th century and this was led to many small areas forming together to create the urban district Great Crosby.

These areas included: Crosby Village, Blundellsands and Thornton.

In terms of etymology research, Crosby was recorded in The Domesday Book as ‘Crosebi’ in 1086 and was referred to as ‘Crosseby’ in 1212[1].

It is clear there is some influence from the Old English period and the Viking’s. As typically, ‘Cosby’ has elements of Viking influence by adding on suffixes to place names. In this instance, the added suffix being ‘by’[2].

This is reasonable research to argue that Great Cosby, though it is a recently named district, the routing of inspirational has been taken from the Viking and Old English period.
