Glossary

This is a glossary of all the advanced terminology used throughout the website and can be used to refer to throughout the reading.

Age of Migrations – a period of human migration that occurred roughly between 300 to 700 in Europe.

Angles – One of the main Germanic tribes who settled in Britain.

Heptarchy – A collective term for the seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England.

Jutes – Part of a larger wave of Germanic settlement in the British Isles.

Old English – a span of time stretching from c.450-c.1100.

Old Norse- Germanic language: ‘language of the Vikings’. 8th to the 14th Century.

Saxons – Germanic people whose name was given in the early Middle Ages who settled in Britiain. 

Suffix – a word ending, usually a few letters long e.g. -ton, -by.
